We have to work with Musharraf

I don't care that Musharraf is a military dictator. I don't care that he has lawyers arrested. I don't care if he decides to have Benazir Bhutto shot.

Pakistan is a big country. A big country that contains a lot of radical Islamists. A lot of people who would like to blow us up.

Pakistan also has nuclear weapons.

Pakistan has a tense relationship with its neighbour, India, which also has nuclear weapons.

Pakistan also has a hostile neighbour, Iran which would like nuclear weapons and would like to cause us a lot of problems.

Pakistan also has for a neighbour Afghanistan, a major international troublespot.

The idea of Pakistan descending into chaos and civil strife is a nightmare scenario. It is too terrible to contemplate.

Human rights and civil liberties are irrelevant here. We need realpolitik. The Bush and Brown must look to Bismarck not to Gladstone.

Musharraf is our ally. We have to talk to him and work with him.

Maybe someone in Pakistan doesn't care if Matthew is arrested or if Gordon Brown decides that Matthew should be shot.

We would all miss you in Blogdom though :-)

I doubt that there is anybody in Pakistan who cares about Matthew C-

However, an awful lot of people in Pakistan care about British foreign policy.

Reasons of State must always come before considerations of individual circumstances.

The fate of Pakistan affects all of us.

Every Blessing in Christ

Matthew

Perhaps we are at the beginnings of the pangs of distress.
