Vicky Dillen on The Message

Vicky Dillen on The Message

The deadly Gnosticism of this paraphrase.

Even without the gnosticism, I think just his way of "translating" Psalm 78:2 is enough to make me toss it out.

KJV - I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old

Peterson - I'm chewing on the morsel of a proverb; I'll let you in on the sweet old truths,

(I'm chewing on the moresel of a proverb is supposed to make more sense than I will open my mouth in a parable? Whose US English is he basing this on?)

Then there's Psalm 41:13:
Blessed is GOD, Israel's God, always, always, always. Yes. Yes. Yes.

It's a good article. The whole thing strikes me as rather wrong.

'The Message' really is appalling.

Did you read the article about all the many people who have endorsed it?

God Bless

No, I didn't read that article. I shall have to take a look at it.

Can I just say "yack".

Dyspraxic Fundamentalist said...

If that means the same as 'yuck', then I agree.

Oh, I just read the endorsements. Lots of names on there that I do not like (Robert Schuller - Mr. Crystal Cathedral himself, Fuller and Bethel Seminaries - both places to find proponents of Open Theology, which I think came out of Bethel, Jack Hayford, Kenneth Copeland, etc.), and those names alone make it quite suspect. Quite frankly I don't care which Christian celebrities endorse it - I think their opinions have as much credence as secular celebrities' political opinions. Just because you're famous doesn't mean you know what you're talking about.

I think you may have successfully converted me to your NO "THE MESSAGE" conviction. This stuff is scary.

A few interesting names came up, like Walter Kaiser, Darrel Bock and perhaps less surprisingly, J.I. Packer.

Yes, The Message is seriously rotten. I know this because my parents' chruch started praising it not long after it was published. If my parents' church likes it, it is probably rotten.

God Bless
